How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Works

Solution focused hypnotherapy is an evidence-based talking therapy that combines the techniques of solution focused brief therapy with deep relaxation and hypnosis. It draws on principles from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

The brain science, in plain terms

Your brain has two broad "modes": an intellectual, calm mode where you think clearly and solve problems, and a primitive, reactive mode designed to keep you safe from threat. Stress, anxiety and low mood happen when you spend too much time in the reactive mode. Solution focused hypnotherapy works by:

  1. Helping you understand why you feel the way you do.

  2. Using solution focused questioning to shift your attention towards what's already going well and what you want more of because what your brain focuses on, it strengthens.

  3. Using hypnosis, a natural, relaxed state of focused attention, similar to being absorbed in a book or film, to reinforce that positive focus and calm the reactive part of the brain.

You remain fully aware and in control throughout hypnosis. It isn't about being "put under" or made to do anything against your will — it's a tool for relaxation and focus, nothing more mysterious than that.

Why we don't dwell on the past

Unlike some talking therapies, solution focused hypnotherapy doesn't require you to repeatedly revisit difficult past events. We work with where you are now and where you want to be. That doesn't mean your history is ignored — it means the focus of our work stays on building you forward, rather than picking apart what went wrong.

What a typical course of sessions looks like

Most clients have somewhere between 6 and 12 sessions, though this varies depending on your goals. Sessions are usually weekly to begin with, moving to fortnightly as you start to feel the benefit.
