Hypnotherapy for IBS
Living with IBS is exhausting
If you have irritable bowel syndrome, you may be planning your day around the nearest toilet, avoiding foods, social events or travel, and worrying about when symptoms will flare. That worry is understandable, and it can become part of the problem.
I offer solution focused hypnotherapy for people with IBS, in Edinburgh and online. Hypnotherapy does not replace medical care. It is a way of working with the part of IBS that involves the gut-brain connection, alongside whatever your GP or dietitian has advised.
The gut and the brain are in constant conversation
Your gut has its own network of nerves and is in two-way contact with your brain. When the body's threat system is on high alert, digestion, gut sensitivity and the way you notice sensations can all change. For many people with IBS, stress and anxiety make symptoms worse, and symptoms in turn increase stress.
With a background in genetic counselling and years as a science teacher, I explain this clearly and without jargon, so that you understand what is happening in your body and why the approach makes sense.
How I work with IBS
-
Understanding first. We look at your symptoms, triggers and what you would like to be different. Many people find that simply understanding the gut-brain link reduces fear.
-
Solution focused conversation. We spend our time on what you want instead, and on times when things are already better, however small.
-
Hypnosis for the gut and the nervous system. Hypnosis is a calm, focused state in which you stay aware and in control. We use it to encourage relaxation, to help your body settle out of high alert, and to practise feeling more at ease with your gut.
-
Tools between sessions. You will leave each session with practical strategies and a recording or practice to use at home.
The first appointment is a consultation with no hypnosis. After that, sessions are usually weekly, then fortnightly as things improve.
Research and what to expect
Gut-directed hypnotherapy has been studied in IBS for many years, and research suggests it can help many people reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. NICE guidance on IBS includes hypnotherapy among the psychological options for people whose symptoms have not improved with other treatment.
Results vary between people, and I cannot promise a particular outcome. What I can promise is a clear, supportive approach built around your own goals.
Is this right for me?
IBS hypnotherapy may suit you if:
-
Your symptoms are linked with stress, anxiety or worry
-
You have tried diet changes and medication and still struggle
-
You find yourself avoiding social events, work or travel because of your gut
-
You would like a structured, time-limited approach
If you have new symptoms, bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or you have not yet been assessed by your GP, please see them first. I am glad to work alongside your medical team.
